What are the benefits of Certification in Financial Counseling?
There are a number of benefits from getting a CFC. One is acquiring skills and knowledge to better serve your clients. The evolution of financial services has moved toward a more collaborative and holistic relationship, a CFC imparts advanced ability to thrive within this modern framework.

How long does the course take to complete?
The course consists of 12 classes that are 1 hour long. The length of time is up to you. You can take them over the course of months, weeks or even days.
Is there testing to ensure material is absorbed and retained?
Yes. Each class is followed by a quiz on the material from the session. It is given on a pass/fail basis with a passing score required for class credit.
Does certification need to be maintained in order to be considered active?
Yes. Like any program of study, refreshing the knowledge base, reviewing skills, and staying current is essential to be updated.
What is the cost of the course/certification?
The initial cost is $598. It includes $399 dollars for the course itself, and $199 for the annual certification fee for the current year.
What are the qualifications for keeping my Financial Counseling Certification active?
Keeping Certification active entails taking a minimum of 2 review classes out of a possible 4 offered during a year. Classes are an hour and review/update seminal Financial Counseling materials.
What does the certification in Financial Counseling look like?
People who complete the course and earn certification receive a “digital badge” that can be placed on websites or correspondence with clients. The option for a printable certificate (for a wall or desk) is included as well.
What’s covered in the class?
The class covers a range of client emotions (e.g., fear, anger, sadness), counseling psychology techniques, investor personality/personality profiling, common mental health issues and tips for working with couples/families.
What is the Financial Counseling Institute?
The Financial Counseling Institute was founded in 2021 by and based on the work of Frank Murtha, PhD., a psychologist by training who has worked for 20 years helping Financial Advisors apply behavioral finance and financial psychology in their businesses.
It is an educational and resource center for financial advisors, planners, and wealth managers – any financial professional who manages relationships with clients.
Are there opportunities for advanced study in Financial Counseling?
Yes. Future classes will be offered that allow for a deeper dive and specialized knowledge.
Are there opportunities for additional instruction/consultation on client cases?
Yes. For an additional fee, “office hours” will be made available with membership with opportunities for consultations.
